12 most used during postpartum

6/1/2022

Now that I've had some time to recover and my little one is now 3 months old, I have had some time to really think of the most used items I used in my first couple of weeks during postpartum. I always use the notes app on my phone and this is what I wrote down in my most tired state of being in those first 4 weeks!

Of course, there's the obvious things or what I thought would be obvious, like:
  • Bassinet
  • Crib
  • Stroller
  • Baby Camera Monitor
  • Baby Wrap or Carrier
  • Pump (if breastfeeding)
  • Diapers
  • Wipes

However, some folks just go straight into a pack and play versus a bassinet or directly into a crib which can be totally normal too. It's all up to you and how you want to set up the sleep environment for you and the new baby in your life! We opt'd to start in the bassinet and then work up to the crib.

Bassinet

Picture
When I was researching types of bassinets and all the things, I did come across the "Snoo" which is a style of bassinet that swears gives you your sleep back earlier because of the technology it delivers for your infant while in it. It provides a swaddle and rocking mechanics. I don't know the full details but some folks swear by it! However, it does come at a hefty price tag. When I was looking at it, it was around $1,200. I think it's even gone up since Christmas 2021 and I think now (being summer 2022). it's around $1,500. There is an option that you could just rent it for about $200.00 a month or so but that was still pretty expensive I thought for something that he may or may not really even like!
So on my search, I found the Graco brand Soothe to Snooze Cry Detection Bassinet, which seemed similar to what the Snoo provides!

It has the technology where when your baby is crying, you can either use the Graco mode or your own schedule set up to determine if you want it to begin rocking, noises, and/or vibrate. We really didn't use that part though but we did love the sound machine on it and the rocking, we used that all the time and I think it really helped. At a 1/3 of the price, it was worth it to me.

Crib

This is a similar crib we opt'd for! It has the changing table attached to it and whereas it was a lot longer than we had anticipated on the location of where we wanted to put it in the room, I'm so glad we went with this one! We use the changing table every day multiple times a day! The storage on it is also perfect!

Stroller

Picture
There are SO many strollers options to think about when you are are a soon to be parent. We ended up going with the Doona for it's flexibility and easy functionality. The Doona is a 2-in-1 car seat and stroller. When you push the button on the back, it flips open into a stroller and vise vera! When in stroller format, you click the button on the back and can switch it to the car seat format. It doesn't get any easier than that! I truly love it and would consider it a MUST HAVE if you ask me. The only thing about it though is there is no storage or cup holder, I will say. If that's what you are looking for in your stroller, this isn't it. If you are looking for something that will be easy and is perfect for travel, this is great for it!

Camera Monitor

Picture
This is the brand, Hubble. We wanted something that we would log into our phones with but also use a parent screen if needed and this has been great! I was a bit skeptical from reading the reviews but 3+ months in and I have no complaints! I did not mean to register for the dual monitor but now I'm glad I did because we have one in the living room now but in the future (hopefully with another kid), we can put one in each room and the parent mode has a way to split screen!

Baby Wrap/Carrier

These are the wraps and carriers, I recommend! The two wraps above for newborns and then when they get a bit older and are able to hold their head up more, the bottom two are great!

Spectra pump (if breastfeeding)

Many insurance policies will cover a pump for partially cover a pump for you so definitely look into that! There are also some second hand ones you could look into on sites like Poshmark.com

Diapers and Wipes

Picture

We were really unsure what to buy when it came to diapers and wipes and we were lucky enough to have some folks gift us different brand of diapers and ultimately, the pampers worked great for us! Some folks say, get more of the size 1 diapers and where as yes, that's absolutely true. We did use the Newborn size for about 4 weeks so don't forget to get a few of those as well until it's time to go to 1's!

What about the NOT SO obvious items??

Here are my top 12 postpartum essentials (from a FTM for mom and baby)

  1. Frida Mom and Frida Baby things (especially ice packs and peri bottle)
  2. Postpartum Seat
  3. Robe
  4. Pumping/Nursing Bra
  5. Mommy Diapers
  6. Sound Machine
  7. DoorDash and UberEats Gift card
  8. Clips for pacifiers
  9. SnuggleMe
  10. Burp Cloths
  11. Newborn Clothes
  12. Basket for the MOTN feedings

Bonus Items that aren't totally necessary but so glad to have:
  • Owlet
  • Hatch (sound machine)
  • Hatch App (tracking)
  • Solly Wrap
  • Great Water Bottle

Frida Mom and Frida Baby

Now I know some folks feel some sort of way about the Frida Mom collection, but for me, it was amazing so I highly recommend the two Kits, the Mom kit and the Baby Kit. But, if that's not your style of not sure if your really want or will need everything in it, I just highly recommend the other items at least from the brand which is the Peri Bottle, the Ice Packs, Nose Sucker, and the Windi.

You can totally take the ice packs, witch hazel, and peri bottle from the hospital but I just felt like the Frida items were much better quality!

Postpartum Seat

Waffle Seat Cushion

Frida Perineal Cooling Comfort Cushion
I actually got both of these seat cushions because my labor was so intense and it was hard for me to sit for long periods of time or even walk so I was caught in the between. I did have hemorrhoids too (obv with 5 hours of pushing) so that made it worse. These seats definitely helped with that!

The waffle seat I actually got from the hospital. The Frida one you can get on amazon or I think I got it from Buy Buy Baby!

Robe

Picture
You will be hot or cool but never ever comfortable to make sure you have something for your postpartum that will make you feel comfortable. Since I was breastfeeding, I wanted something that would be easily accessible on and off. I practically lived in this thing for a week (kind of gross, right?) But I smelt like poopie diapers, breast milk, and spit up all that the same time so whatever. HA!

Pumping/Nursing Bra
(only for breastfeeders)

Mommy Diapers

Picture
I know it sucks but it's totally needed. With the amount of bleeding happening and all the ice packs, hemorrhoid creams, these are great and much more comfortable than they seem.

Sound Machine

Picture
This is my #1 recommendation for a portable sound machine. It has 3 different sound options and different brightness for lights. It has a loop that you can clip onto anything; we keep it on the stroller! Bonus, it NEVER stops, unless it's dead. You can charge it by plugging it into the outlet like a computer or phone! So, no batteries.

There's also the Baby Shusher and we like that as well, but it does stop after 30 minutes.

I also recommend a stationary one to keep in the house but more on that later! If you wanted, you could just use the Amazon Alexa though if you have that! We used that while he was still in the bassinet in our room until he transitioned to the crib.

**Also great for those night time feedings for a night light**

Food Delivery

Picture
This is something that you obviously wouldn't necessarily buy yourself but if someone is asking what they can provide to you, food delivery gift card is at the TOP of the list. Doordash, UberEats, Postmates, anything! Also a good home cooked meal is always welcome at the door step as well!

The last thing you want to do is eat let alone think about what you want to eat. We had about $200 worth of door dash gift card and it was a literal Godsend!

Pacifier Clip(s)

Picture
You can use whatever pacifier clip you like but just having them in general is a must, I think! Trying to find them loose is for the birds. This is an easy way to keep ahold of it and make sure it isn't lost!

SnuggleMe

Picture
This was an amazing gift we received! We could lay him in here and he was so comfortable in it! It felt like a cloud to him (I assume) and like he was still in mom's arms. As long as he was being watched, he was safe in here!

Burp Cloths

Picture
Oh my, ALL the burp cloths. I recommend getting several and putting them in different pockets of EVERY room.

Newborn Clothes

Picture
They make them for a reason. Everyone was like "don't buy newborn clothes because they just grow out of them so quickly". Well, let me tell you, we had maybe 3 outfits and the rest were 0-3 months mostly. We had to go out and buy newborn clothes because for about 4 weeks, that's what he was wearing. So, just grab you a pack like this so you don't have to worry about it!

Basket or Caddy

Picture
We went with the basket but a little caddy would work as well. This is for those late night/middle of the night (4 times a night) feeding and diaper changes. We also just took this from room to room with us. It was easier than trying to take him back and forth to the bedroom in those early days and easier than lugging around something that wheeled. I know some prefer that, but this was our life savor in those early weeks. I filled it with diapers, wipes, nipple cream, water bottles, pacifiers.

Special 13th item: Nipple Cream
(if breastfeeding)

Picture
I know they give you the lanolin in the hospital, but as soon as I used this, I NEVER went back. This stuff is smooth as butter. Feels so much better than the thick stuff. Got to try it!

5 Bonus Items:

These are the items that didn't make it in my TOP 12 but they are SO nice to have. They didn't make it in the top 12 because I felt like the type of item itself may be necessary but the brand of the item wasn't totally necessary. I hope that makes sense. For example, a baby wrap (I think it totally worth it) but the Solly wrap would be my choice but there's sooo many out there for you to choose your favorite.

  • Owlet
  • Hatch (sound machine)
  • Hatch App (tracking)
  • Solly Wrap
  • Great Water Bottle
